Coyo Taco opened in December 2014 at 2300 NW 2nd Ave in Wynwood, launched by chef Scott Linquist alongside partners Sven Vogtland and Alan Drummond. Linquist brought 20-plus years of Mexican-kitchen experience, including stints as national executive chef of Dos Caminos and executive chef at Border Grill, and the trio built the taqueria as a budget-friendly, fresh-made counterpart to fine-dining Mexican food. It was Wynwood's first taqueria and drew lines down the block within its first months.
Handmade tortillas and street-taco staples like the shrimp taco (once named Best Taco in America by the New York Post) and the cochinita pibil, a favorite of Barack Obama on a 2018 visit. Behind the counter-service front, Coyo runs a hidden mezcal and tequila bar with a DJ booth and Japanese-burnt-wood, Cuban-tile decor, pouring 50-plus agave spirits into the early morning.
The shrimp taco was named Best Taco in America by the New York Post. No Michelin, James Beard, or World's 50 Best recognition has been verified for Coyo Taco.
The speakeasy is unmarked, walk past the restrooms toward the back of the dining room to find the door. The taqueria itself is quick counter service, cash or card, no reservations, while the back bar runs later (open past midnight most nights, closer to 3 a.m. Thursday through Sunday) with its own line on busy weekends. Expect loud music and a club-like crowd in the bar as the night goes on, it's a different vibe from the taco counter up front.
